The Real Australian Outback.
The Australian Outback. What is it? Where is it? It's not particularly feasible to answer that question, simply because it is not a precise location limited to any one geographical part of the country. To begin to comprehend what the Australian Outback truly is, you need to know that Australia's people are mainly centered along the eastern and southern coastal areas of Australia. Apart from that, the only other real population center in Australia is Perth, with a little over 1 million living here. What is It? The descriptive term The Outback, is usually used to describe the vastness, the loneliness, the solitude and emptiness of these colossal sized areas and also the mammoth driving distances within internal Australia. Not all Aussie's converse or chat about "the Outback" as such. It is mainly people who live in, or close to the cities who describe it as that. Australians tend to talk about "the bush" or "beyond the black stump" when discussing the outback. If you don't know what beyond the "black stump" means. It basically means, out in the back blocks, the boonies, far off in the distance or back country, a long way from civilization, outside a city or town, anywhere that has trees and scrub or sand dunes and no people to speak of. I guess, where it is, and indeed what is the Australian Outback, differs according to where a person lives or has been to in their travels. To me, who has spent most of his life working in and visiting country areas it means, many things, many places, all beautiful,interesting and enjoyable and places which are very much out of the way. There is no set answer that nails it down to a particular area, simply because the Aussie outback is so huge. The outback covers about 6.5 million square kilometres, 2.5 million square miles and it is only inhabited by about 60,000 odd people or thereabouts of approximately 20 million folks who live here in Australia.So it is a gigantic area with a very small population.
The good folks who live in the Outback regions love it and they respect it and nature does indeed, rule the roost absolutely in the Australian Outback, It's not an inhospitable or frightening area, but it can be if you don't know it intimately. I would assume that some people are unfamiliar with us and our country so if you have never experienced the outback, you will need to ask the local people about it, or do some research on the Internet so that you can enjoy a happy and safe trip in our outback regions. If you intend to drive around the Australian Outback you can get into serious trouble. But if you do it correctly then you will have a good journey. A big percentage of roads in the Australian Outback are 4wd onlyso don't just jump in the family sedan and take off, you may have a shorter trip than you intended. I have built a page for you called

There is one thing that you perhaps should not do, and that is travel in the remote areas alone.
