Margaret River for surf, wine and great vacations.

Margaret River is a town that really has made the most of the many advantages of being situated in the South West of Western Australia. Until the mid 1960s it was much like dozens of other small towns, it was in fact just a support centre for the local Farms (mostly dairy) and also the then booming timber industry. Then something happened in the sixties, ( The Beatles? ) No, a very "with it" family began to grow wine grapes there. The vines produced a very fine drop of wine indeed and the rest, they say, is history.

Come and join the annual vintage celebration this weekend!Starting Friday 2nd May.

The Margaret River Wine Region Festival is set to take off again in just 2 days time. There are still tickets available to most events including the headline event, the Vintage Festival at Cowaramup Oval on Saturday 3rd May where you can taste over 100 wines, listen to some cool jazz and sample gourmet treats hot off the bbq.

Includes a souvenir tasting glass on entry for just $15 pp. This will be a great day out for anyone interested in sampling some new and/or old release Margaret River wines. Tickets also available at the gate. There is plenty of parking on the oval or you can take the free link bus from Margaret River. The Win a Cellar promotion will be drawn at 4pm on the day and you could be the lucky winner!

Or jump on a Wine Explorer bus around the vineyards for just $35 pp presale or $45 pp on the day. Stop at 6 wineries and sample their goodies. Departs from Cowaramup Oval starting at 10.30am on Saturday 3rd May only.

Mini Festivals will be held at Seashells Caves House, the Knights Inn, Margaret River and the Augusta Hotel on Sat 3rd May. Tickets $15 pp at the door.

On Sunday, the Vintage Stomp will cater for everyone with the grand parade kicking off at noon followed by circus and cabaret style acts all afternoon. This will be loads of fun with the waiters race, tug of war, kids rides and face painting. Just $10 for adults, $5 for kids and $20 for a family of 4.

Order your tickets now by calling. Local call(08) 9757 9330, overseas call +61+897579330 or you can buy online at Margaret Wine Festival. Tickets will also be available at the door.

Check out the other special events at wineries over the weekend or join us at the Street Party on Friday night with Wine Barrel Races and food and wine on the Mainstreet of Margaret River, its free.

Margaret River has now achieved tourism success, based on Wine, surf, and a laid back lifestyle.

It’s population has grown to about 5600 and the local council claims that there are nearly 1.5 million tourists visiting there every year.

The main street has a certain vitality because it is a very attractive shopping venue, with a large range of services available attracting a steady and lively custom. Conscious decisions by the local council has led to low key development being the norm here, so there are no skyscrapers here at all.

The laid back charm of the South West pretty much remains as it used to be with very friendly, helpful people who are only too pleased to point you in the right direction when asked.

Margaret River is a centre for surf at a competitive and casual level, and is also a centre for that surf culture. Other sports that are part of the lifestyle in Margaret River include Golf, swimming, tennis, squash, bowls, Australian Rules Football, Hockey, Soccer, Rugby, Cricket, Basketball and Netball.

Wine has become important to Margaret River’s image, but has also become a mainstay of it’s economy, so viticulture and wine processing are critical to Margaret River's economy.

Surfing is also important, bringing a big proportion of the tourists that support the town into the area.
As with any small town catering for about 1.5 million tourists per year,
Margaret River has a thriving hospitality industry and retail sector.

Some mates you might see on your travels.

Having surfed at Margaret River I can attest to the size and the quality of the surf breaks, they are great.

As for the wines, don't know but the beer's wonderful and so is the food.
