When the warmer weather is here so are the wild flowers of Western Australia. and the warm weather makes it very pleasant to do the outdoors thing especially when the wild flowers are expanding right down through the state.
At the right time of the year this magic carpet of flowers can be seen from Kununurra in the North West to Albany in the South West. For a great weekend getaway or even a longer break away from the hum drum of normal life take a trip to Kalbarri, further north to the Kimberley or head down to the South West.
At the moment the wild flowers are blooming even in front of my house.

July to November is the best time of the year for the wild flowers of WA which will show you a multicolored carpet of wild flowers

For approximately five months of each and every year WA wildflowers are scattered across nearly 2.5 million square Kilometers of this wonderful State of Western Australia.
About 12,000 separate species can be found here in the west. And many of these wild flowers are totally unique to this part of the world. Thousands of these amazing flowers and shrubs are yet to be named by the botanists.Laze cows they should get on with it, don't you think? (Just joking)
The very best locations for your wild flower experience starts with the Pilbara in the North during July, and then gradually moves south reaching Esperance in November.
The Wildflower Season is with us right nowAnd there are a number of differing trails to show you the best of them.
Exploring the Coral Coast Wildflowers 2009
The Everlastings Trail
Meanders it's way from Perth. through a number of areas ablaze with ever changing colors.The everlastings trail will take you amongst some of the most spectacular wildflower areasoften stretching lazily as far as the horizon.
Have a picnic on the shady river bank at Regan's Ford.
Visit the world famous Pinnacles.
Indulge yourself in a magnificent seafood lunch at Dongara.
Make sure you visit the giant Murals of Mullewa.
The magnificent fields of lollipop shaped everlasting's flowers in yellow, pink and white are found in a number of inland areas, often along the road verges.
For more information go to Wildflower trails on the Coral Coast where you will find all you need to know. You will start just north of Perth at Cevantes along the Indian Ocean Drive which winds it's way along the coast to Dongara.
On the way home take the Great Northern Highway for a different experience.
North West Trail
To take the north west trail go along the North West Coastal highway via Geraldton and Kalbarri and then on to Shark Bay and Carnarvon.You will find wild flowers clinging to the landscapes of the rugged North West.Head north on Brand highway or Indian Ocean Way past Dongara, further north is Geraldton where many varieties of multi colored flowers adorn the land.
The road sides are covered in a carpet at this time and easily seen.
Driving along Yerina Springs road you will be delighted by thedisplays of orchids such as donkey, bee, cowslip orchids and you may be lucky enough to see the rare midget greenhood orchid.Continue along the coast road via Port Gregory and onto Kalbarri at the mouth of the famous Murchison river.
In the near by Kalbarri National Park there are roughly 180,000 hectares ( 450,000 acres )with miles of wild flowers which offer a dazzling display of profuse colors.Some of the flowers you may encounter are the Kalbarri spider orchid and the Murchison hammer orchid.
Other types of wild flowers and flowering natives are, River gums, gold and orange banksias, kangaroo paws in a varity of colors, grevilleas, starflowers and eucalypts.
When you have seen enough it is time to rejoin the North West Coastal highway and head towards Shark Bay where you will be rapt to share an experience with the visiting dolphins.
How far north you go is up to you but you should be able to view wild flowers all the way to Carnarvon and east of there.

North of Perth is the best known area for it's amazing carpets of everlasting flowers, and it is also home to a large variety of coastal wildflowers.
On the way to the Pinnacle's you can see everlasting's, spider orchids, leschenaultias, fringe lilies, kangaroo paws and many banksias.
In the Geraldton region you will see the magnificent river gums, Geraldton wax plants, orange and gold banksias, all sorts of grevilleas, kangaroo paws, feather flowers, starflowers, smokebushes and the eucalyptus are in abundance.
The magnificent fields of lollipop shaped everlasting's flowers in yellow, pink and white are found in a number of inland areas, often along road verges.
Near Kalbarri you can expect to experience the beauty of the magnificent kangaroo paws, Grevilleas, banksias and eucalypts (Gum Trees).
Also in the Kalbarri region you will be able to find many other species of spectacular wild flowers such as
Wattles, hakeas, grevilleas, dampiera, and the purple peas are also prevalent in this area.
Shark Bay daisies are as common as muck around Monkey Mia and the Shark Bay World Heritage Area along with plenty of other different types of wild flower.

The Carnarvon area has miles of parakeelya, purple vetch, northern blue bells and birdflower for your enjoyment.
Cape Range National Park - which borders Ningaloo Reef has even greater concentrations of varieties and more than 650 species have been found so far.
Some of those identified include - Yardie Creek morning glory, Ashburton peas, hairy pepperflowers, daisies, wattles, native tomatoes, hibbertia, native foxgloves, Sturt's desert pea, rattlebrush, green birdflower and the toucan flower.
In the Pilbara you will be totally amazed at the vast amount of everlastings, as far as the eye can see, from horizon to horizon in fact.
The Pilbara has about 50 verities of acacia species, wattle, mulga and yellow native hibiscus, There are, bluebells, sticky cassia, mulla mulla, native fuschias, spinifex, and the tangled morning glory, you will also find plenty of native almonds, holly leafed grevillea, and sea been and mangroves.

South from Perth produces a wide diversity of wildflowers and an amazing profusion of other flora.
The iconic towns south of Perth such as Margaret River, Albany, Pemberton, Denmark and Esperance are famous for their wildflower displays.
See the dainty flowers such as honeypots, orchids, milkmaids, green kangaroo paws and the mountain bells.
Roughly 150 species of orchids are known to inhabit the south west area, along with grass trees like the Kingia australis, aromatic plants like the brown boronia and more than 165 species of eucalypts (Gum Trees).You will see these friendly little fellows where ever you go.
The south can also boast 80 species of carnivorous plants such as the Albany pitcher plant.
Mistletoes including the amazing Western Australian Christmas trees are also common here.
The more spectacular flowers include kangaroo paws, hakea, hardenbenbergia, chorizema, verctordia and the blue lechenaultia are found here.
Coral vine, morning iris, yellow buttercups, blue squill, tiny stars, pink and lemon rainbows, golden dryandraurchin hakeas, yellow and pink verticordias, red bottlebrush, mountain bells,will also be found among this smorgasbord of flowering plants and trees.
This entire area is a flower lovers delight with -orange/lemon scented darwinia, cat's paws, cockies tongue, parrot bush, holly flame tree, karri pea flower and the amazingly named snotty gobble.
Orchids such as donkey, pink fairy, jug, star, blue china, rabbits ears, hammer, bird, red tongues spider, mantis, clubbed spider, white spider, pink enamel, cowslip, Queen of Sheba.
Bremer Bay's Fitzgerald River National Park is a particular mecca for the wildflower enthusiast due to its prolific display and the diversity of species available.
Traveling east from Perth, York has pygmy sundews, rosy cheeked donkey orchids, climbing fringed lily, and mouse ears.
The Wave Rock area can boast a wide range of twisted gimlets, orchids, zigzag wattle, pink everlastings, Sturt's desert pea, bronze clossey, cowslip, native grasses, purple cyanostegia augustilolia, yellow glischocaryon and gimlet thicket.
The Kalgoorlie/Goldfields region has fields of everlastings as well as the poached egg (Hungry?), daisies, pink mulla mulla, orange immortelle, acacia, hakea and blue pincushion .
The many thousands of varieties of West Australian wildflowers will leave you with an everlasting memory. You will be able to reflect on your own amazing experience for many years to come.
